Insomnia symptoms and incident heart failure: A population-based cohort study
European Heart Journal Aug 19, 2021
Mahmood A, Ray M, Dobalian A, et al. - Insomnia symptoms (difficulty initiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, early-morning awakening, non-restorative sleep) should be screened in at-risk populations in order to attenuate heart failure (HF) incidence as symptoms of insomnia, both cumulatively and individually, are related to incident HF.
From the Health and Retirement Study in the US, data were taken for 12,761 middle-aged and older adults (age ≥ 50 years) who were free from HF at baseline in 2002.
A 16-year follow-up revealed incident HF development in 1,730 respondents.
A higher hazard of incident HF was noted in respondents having one, two, three, or four insomnia symptoms vs asymptomatic respondents.
For respondents with above-mentioned insomnia symptoms, a higher hazard of incident HF was estimated vs asymptomatic respondents.
Public health awareness for insomnia symptoms in at-risk groups should be promoted.
