Inner retinal thickening affects microperimetry thresholds in the presence of photoreceptor thinning in patients with RPGR retinitis pigmentosa

British Journal of Ophthalmology Nov 04, 2020

Jolly JK, Menghini M, Johal PA, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective cohort study to investigate the changes in inner retinal structure associated with photoreceptor disease and their effect on the microperimetry threshold. This investigation was carried out on optical coherence tomography (OCT) images and microperimetry tests collected between 2013 and 2019. Twenty-two eyes with RPGR retinitis pigmentosa completed both OCT imaging and microperimetry evaluation. The connection between the photoreceptor layer and inner retinal thickness, and microperimetry threshold has been explored. In the inner retinal layers secondary to photoreceptor disease, OCT reveals evidence of remodelling. This seems to have an effect on microperimetry threshold measurements.
