Injurious falls and subsequent adverse drug events among elderly: A Swedish population-based matched case-control study

BMC Geriatrics Sep 08, 2017

Rausch C, et al. - This study explored the link between fall injuries and subsequent unintentional poisoning by medication among elderly, focusing on different clinical conditions of the injured patients. Following an episode of hospitalization for a fall-related injury, subsequent hospitalization or death ascribed to medication-related poisoning can be an adverse drug event (ADE). Poisoning was more likely to occur closer to the injurious event and among the younger elderly. Researchers failed to rule out that some of those falls were themselves ADE and early signs of greater vulnerability among certain patients.
