Initiating anticoagulant therapy after ICH is associated with patient characteristics and treatment recommendations
Journal of Neurology Aug 27, 2018
Sembill JA, et al. - In this prospective observational study, researchers examined oral anticoagulant (OAC) recommendations, implementation, and adherence and factors correlated with OAC initiation after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) by analyzing data of consecutive ICH patients treated at the Neurological and Neurosurgical Department of the University-Hospital Erlangen, Germany over a 21-month inclusion period (May 2013–January 2015). Findings revealed that OAC initiation after ICH were significantly influenced by clear treatment recommendations from attending stroke physicians. Data reported that OACs were more frequently recommended and started in younger patients with better functional recovery, independent from intracranial complications. This could be an important determinant of observed beneficial associations, hinting towards an indication bias which might affect observational analyses.
