Initial in-hospital heart rate is associated with three-month functional outcomes after acute ischemic stroke

BMC Neurology Jun 16, 2021

Kuo YW, Lee M, Huang YC, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the link between initial in-hospital heart rate (HR) and visit-to-visit variations with 3-month functional results following acute ischemic stroke (AIS). They used a hospital-based stroke registry and identified 1,420 patients with AIS. They employed multivariable logistic regression analysis to estimate odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals. Findings demonstrated a significant association between a high initial in-hospital HR and unfavorable 3-month functional outcomes in patients with AIS. Additionally, unfavorable outcomes were present in stroke patients with a HR-CV (coefficient of variation of heart rate)  ≥ 0.12, vs those with a HR-CV < 0.08, if they had a history of hypertension.
