Initial cognitive impairment predicts shorter survival of patients with glioblastoma
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Sep 16, 2021
Bruhn H, Blystad I, Milos P, et al. - Glioblastoma (GBM) patients presenting with cognitive symptoms exhibited reduced survival and had larger tumours and such cases were difficult to identify. Whereas, longer survival and smaller tumours were seen in relation to epileptic seizures as the first symptom.
This study involved 189 GBM patients.
Reduced survival was experienced in relation to initial global symptoms (66% of all patients) vs no global symptoms (median 8.4 months vs. 12.6 months).
Presence of change of behaviour, memory impairment and/or disorientation was linked with a decreased median survival to 6.4 months.
Global symptoms were related to larger tumours compared with seizures, but tumour size had no linear connection with survival.
