Inhaled nitric oxide is associated with improved oxygenation in a subpopulation of infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and pulmonary hypertension
The Journal of Pediatrics Nov 15, 2019
Lawrence KM, Monos S, Adams S, et al. - Researchers determined in this retrospective chart review which patients with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and pulmonary hypertension (PH) benefit from inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) treatment by contrasting the features and outcomes of iNO responders with nonresponders. The sample consisted of infants with CDH treated at the center between 2011 and 2016. Ninety-five of 131 patients with CDH were treated with iNO during the study period. All individuals with pretreatment echocardiograms had echocardiographic evidence of PH. In a subpopulation of patients with CDH with PH and normal left ventricular systolic function, iNO treatment was linked to improved oxygenation and reduced need for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
