Inhaled corticosteroids and the risk of lung cancer in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): A population-based cohort study
European Respiratory Journal Apr 11, 2019
Raymakers AJN, et al. - Researchers investigated the effect of inhaled corticosteroids on lung cancer risk in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by analyzing population-based linked administrative data from the province of British Columbia, Canada. They analyzed data between 1997 and 2007. They defined COPD based on the receipt of three COPD-related prescriptions in subjects aged ≥ 50 years. Overall 39,676 patients were included in this analysis. The study population had a mean age of 70.7 years, and 53% were female. Overall, ICS use in COPD patients resulted in a reduction in the risk of lung cancer.
