Inhaled corticosteroids and risk of lung cancer: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
European Journal of Clinical Investigation Oct 20, 2020
Lin P, Fu S, Li W, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta‐analysis to pool all currently available data to assess the relationship between inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) use and the risk of lung cancer. They searched Medline (1946 to July 2020), Embase (1974 to July 2020), and the Cochrane Library (June 2020) via Ovid to find relevant articles evaluating the relationship between ICS use and the risk of lung cancer. Pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals were calculated using random effects analysis. They examined ten articles including a total of 234,920 patients. ICS use was related to a decreased risk of lung cancer in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and mixed patients. A relationship was found between ICS use and reduced risk of lung cancer, though the data should be interpreted cautiously because most original studies were thought to be at high risk of immortal time bias.
