Influenza vaccine effectiveness among patients with cancer: A population-based study using health administrative and laboratory testing data from Ontario, Canada

Journal of Clinical Oncology Oct 18, 2019

Blanchette PS, Chung H, Pritchard KI, et al. - Researchers undertook this observational test-negative design study, to determine vaccine effectiveness (VE) against laboratory-confirmed influenza for patients with cancer. Participants were patients with a previous diagnosis of cancer, aged 18 years and older, and who had received influenza testing during the 2010-2011 to 2015-2016 influenza seasons in Ontario, Canada. Findings revealed VE of 21% against laboratory-confirmed influenza and VE against laboratory-confirmed influenza hospitalization was identified to be 20%. Experts concluded that patients with cancer should receive influenza vaccination. Patients with hematologic malignancies exhibited a decreased VE, and no significant difference was found in VE among patients with solid tumor cancer taking active chemotherapy. It is justifiable to implement strategies to optimize influenza prevention among patients with cancer.
