Influenza vaccination and 1-year risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, pneumonia, and mortality among intensive care unit survivors aged 65 years or older: A nationwide population-based cohort study
Intensive Care Medicine Jun 18, 2019
Christiansen CF, et al. - In this study with intensive care unit (ICU) survivors (n=89,818, aged ≥ 65 years), researchers determined the impact of influenza vaccination on 1-year risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, pneumonia, and death. They extracted data from Danish Intensive Care Database for elderly ( ≥ 65 years) hospitalized in Danish ICUs from 2005–2015, and subsequently discharged. Data from other medical registries were also used. A lower 1-year risk of stroke and a lower 1-year risk of mortality was seen among influenza vaccinated ICU survivors vs unvaccinated ICU survivors, however, no substantial link was evident with regard to the risk of hospitalization for myocardial infarction, heart failure, or pneumonia. Overall, influenza vaccination of people aged ≥ 65 years is supported.
