Influence of vitrectomy on the progression of dry age-related macular degeneration
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Oct 21, 2020
Muftuoglu IK, Lin T, Bartsch DU, et al. - This study was undertaken to determine if pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) changes the progression of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by evaluating longitudinal changes in drusen volume over follow-up. Patients with dry AMD who had undergone unilateral PPV for symptomatic vitreomacular disorders were assessed for disease progression by spectral domain-optical coherence tomography features like drusen volume, development of geographic atrophy, or choroidal neovascularization during follow-up. Of the 183 eyes with both vitreoretinal disorder and dry AMD, 48 eyes of 24 patients met the criteria for inclusion and were involved. Vitrectomy did not appear to worsen dry AMD progression; even more visual acuity can improve despite a small increase in drusen volume after surgery.
