Influence of the extent of intraventricular hemorrhage on functional outcome and mortality in intracerebral hemorrhage

Cerebrovascular Diseases Jun 21, 2019

Roeder SS, et al. - Because intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a verified independent prognostic parameter, researchers analyzed the impact of IVH on clinical outcomes. The authors evaluated 1,112 consecutive primary ICH subjects of the UKER-ICH cohort and hypothesized that there was no distinction in outcome between patients without IVH and patients with minor IVH that did not lead to obstructive hydrocephalus. According to findings, small amounts of intraventricular blood (Graeb score ≤2) that do not lead to obstructive hydrocephalus are not linked to adverse events or death after ICH. Therefore, in outcome prediction for ICH patients, IVH per se should not be considered a binary variable.
