Influence of prior appendectomy and cholecystectomy on Clostridioides difficile infection recurrence and mortality
American Journal of Surgery Oct 27, 2019
Franko J, Ferrel B, Pierson P, et al. - Given the linking of remote appendectomy to increased incidence of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), researchers examined how the absence of vermiform appendix and/or gallbladder influence recurrence rate and severity of CDI. They assessed a systemwide patient cohort diagnosed with initial CDI in 2014 (n = 250) and identified the absence of appendix and gallbladder among 47 and 64 patients, respectively. Outcomes revealed no effect on the CDI recurrence rate in correlation to remote appendectomy or cholecystectomy. Higher mortality rates were observed among patients with prior cholecystectomy which were associated with their CDI.
