Influence of patella thickness on patellofemoral pressure in total knee arthroplasty
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Mar 27, 2021
Tanikawa H, Tada M, Ogawa R, et al. - This study was carried out to assess the influence of patella thickness on patellofemoral pressure in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Researchers operated five freshly frozen cadavers with a custom-made Stryker posterior stabilizing type knee joint prosthesis. They assessed patellofemoral joint pressure using a pressure sensor, with the knee joint flexed from 90 to 110 degrees, and with a patellar thickness of − 2 mm to + 4 mm. The patellofemoral pressure were influenced by the amount of patellar osteotomy. Since the resulting increased patellofemoral pressure may reduce knee joint function, surgeons should avoid increasing patella thickness.
