Influence of body mass index on the clinicopathologic features of papillary thyroid carcinoma
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Mar 15, 2019
Feng JW, et al. - A total of 417 cases were examined to assess the influence of excess weight gain on clinicopathologic characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and outcomes. Authors recorded overweight and obesity as independent predictors of vascular invasion, while obesity was noted as an independent predictor of extrathyroidal invasion. Among BMI groups, no significant variances were reported in locoregional recurrence of PTC. They implied extrathyroidal invasion, vascular invasion, cervical lymph node metastasis, and advanced tumor-node-metastasis stage as independent influences for locoregional recurrence. Results of the study suggest that excess weight is linked with aggressive clinicopathologic characteristics of PTC, though patients with higher BMI did not have a higher risk for developing postoperative complications and locoregional recurrence.
