Inflammatory bowel diseases and the risk of adverse health outcomes: Umbrella review of meta-analyses of observational studies
Digestive and Liver Diseases Feb 09, 2021
Shen X, Wan Q, Zhao R, et al. - Researchers assessed and graded data on the link between inflammatory bowel diseases and the risk of adverse health outcomes in this umbrella review of meta-analyses. This was a meta-analyses of observational studies in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science that investigated the connections between inflammatory bowel disease and the risk of adverse health outcomes. Twenty-five meta-analyses were used in this umbrella review, which yielded 123 effect estimates for 60 unique putative health outcomes. There was a greater risk of adverse health effects, including multiple cancers, cardiovascular disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes, adverse oral outcomes, and other adverse events in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. In addition, inflammatory bowel diseases, based on the evidence provided, have caused greater health damage. None of the evidence, however, was classified as “high” quality, only 15% was classified as “moderate,” and 65% of outcomes were rated as “very low.”
