Inflammatory biomarkers and brain health indicators in children with overweight and obesity: The ActiveBrains project
Brain, Behavior, and Immunity Jul 25, 2019
Adelantado-Renau M, et al. - Among overweight/obese children (n=107, 10.0 ± 1.1 years, 41% girls) from the ActiveBrains project, researchers assessed the links between inflammatory biomarkers [white blood cell count, interleukin-6, interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and C-reactive protein] and brain health indicators, such as academic performance, executive function, behavioural and emotional functioning, and total and regional brain volume. They found that inflammation was slightly related to brain health (ie, academic performance, behavioural and emotional functioning and regional brain volume) among the participants. Particularly, academic failure and behavioural and emotional dysfunctions might be caused by inflammation. In this population, executive function and total brain volumes did not appear to be influenced by inflammatory biomarkers.
