Inflammation and its consequences after surgical vs transcatheter aortic valve replacement
Artificial Organs Dec 14, 2017
Uhle F, et al. - Researchers carried out a prospective, single-center, nonrandomized explorative study to assess the differences between two aortic valve replacement procedures [surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)] regarding immune responses or changes in coagulation and neurocognitive function. Patients after SAVR or transapical-TAVR showed a robust pro-inflammatory response, which is—on the cytokine level—counterbalanced only in SAVR patients. Findings here revealed a higher impact of transapical-TAVR on neurocognitive function and suggested a potentially detrimental activation of platelets in some patients after SAVR.
