Infertility causes and pregnancy outcome in patients with familial Mediterranean fever and controls
The Journal of Rheumatology Apr 07, 2021
Sotskiy PO, Sotskaya OL, Hayrapetyan HS, et al. - Researchers examined familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) patients in order to determine the causes of infertility and pregnancy outcome among them. In addition, they compared them with 2 groups: non-FMF patients with peritoneal female genital tuberculosis (FGTB) and normal healthy controls. In this retrospective study, they recruited FMF patients with reproductive disorders from the National Center of Medical Genetics and Primary Health Care in Yerevan, Armenia. Recruitment of patients with FGTB and the healthy controls with reproductive problems was done successively from a large gynecology clinic in Yerevan. The etiologies of infertility were identified to be similar between the FMF group (211 patients) and the FGTB group (127 patients). Observations revealed no adverse effect of colchicine medication and controlled FMF disease on the reproductive system and pregnancy outcome. However, infertility and poor pregnancy outcome may result because of a lack of an appropriate colchicine treatment.
