Fagin AP, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study at a level I trauma center in Portland, Oregon, researchers estimated data on 17 candidates to evaluate the prevalence of postinjury infection among subjects with SIGW to the maxillofacial region and also to know that if there were any microbial patterns that could guide empiric antibiotic selection. They defined subjects who had a culture-positive infection within 30 days of their injury as postinjury infection, which developed among 6 cases. On average, for 14 days, 88% of individuals received a course of prophylactic antibiotics. They observed culture grew gram-negative bacteria in 4 cases of the 6 subjects of postinjury infection ie, anaerobic bacteria in 2 and polymicrobial organisms in 2. Despite prophylactic antibiotic usage in 88% of cases, SIGSWs were reported in relation to a high rate of postinjury infection (35%).
