Infant mortality associated with prenatal opioid exposure
JAMA Apr 15, 2021
Leyenaar JK, Schaefer AP, Wasserman JR, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to describe infant mortality among opioid-exposed infants and to determine how mortality risk varies in opioid-exposed infants with and without a diagnosis of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) compared with infants without opioid exposure. Using Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests, the risk of infant mortality (death at age < 365 days) was examined. Prenatal opioid exposure was found in 7,207 of 1,129,032 maternal-infant dyads, with 4,238 diagnosed with NOWS (mean [SD] birth weight, 2,851 [624] g) and 2,969 not diagnosed with NOWS (mean [SD] birth weight, 2,971 [639] g). Opioid-exposed infants seemed to be at increased risk of mortality in this study, and the treatments and supports offered to those diagnosed with NOWS may be protective. Regardless of the perceived severity of neonatal opioid withdrawal, interventions to support opioid-exposed maternal-infant dyads are warranted.
