Ineffectiveness of procalcitonin-guided antibiotic therapy in severely critically ill patients: A meta-analysis
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Aug 07, 2019
Peng F, et al. - The management of critically ill patients is influenced by optimizing antibiotic therapy, so researchers examined the effectiveness of procalcitonin (PCT)-guided antibiotic therapy in these patients via a meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials enrolling 6,452 critically ill patients. As per the pooled analysis, PCT-guided cessation of antibiotics led to a reduced short-term mortality in patients in patients with an average SOFA score of <8, but not those with a SOFA score of > 8. Intensive care unit length of stay (LOS) and hospital LOS in critically ill patients were not reduced in correlation with PCT-guided antibiotic therapy. Patients received antibiotics for a shorter duration in correlation with PCT-guided antibiotic therapy.
