Industry payments to physician directors of National Cancer Institute–designated cancer centers, 2015-2017
JAMA Aug 11, 2019
Carr D, et al. - Using Open Payments data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, researchers assessed industry payments made to physician directors of National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers, given that industry payments to academic physicians risk blurring the line between discovery and the assessment of novel therapies. For calendar years 2015 through 2017, information regarding all industry payments (total payments) and for their component research payments and payments not related to research was extracted. Receipt of industry payments by nearly half of physician directors of NCI cancer centers and nonreceipt by about half, in 2017, was revealed in this study. Less frequent industry payments were reported as compared with those reported for authors of National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines in 2014 and leaders of academic oncology units in 2015 (ie, department chairs and section chiefs). Receipt of more than $5000 in payments unrelated to research, by almost one-quarter of physician directors, was reported.
