Induction opioids for caesarean section under general anaesthesia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia Jun 27, 2019
White LD, et al. - Researchers examined whether induction opioids can be used in cesarean section without unfavorably affecting the neonate. Searching six databases systematically, they included seventeen studies (n=987) in the meta-analysis. Comparison of remifentanil 0.5–1 μg/kg or 2–3 μg/kg/h, alfentanil 7.5–10 μg/kg and fentanyl 0.5–1 μg/kg to placebo was done. Findings support induction opioids as effective sympatholytic agents. Remifentanil and alfentanil had no significant effect on Apgar scores or neonatal airway intervention supporting their possible safety. However, confirmation of these findings in a well-powered trial is recommended.
