Induction chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy for N3 head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
Head & Neck Dec 12, 2019
Du C, Blanchard P, Even C, et al. - To ascertain the role of induction chemotherapy (ICT) and potential prognostic factors, researchers performed a retrospective study involving 120 patients with N3 (≥ 6 cm) head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), in which they examined participants’ treatment outcomes following induction chemotherapy (ICT) succeeded by definitive radiation. Outcomes revealed a response rate to ICT of 68.3%. Factors predicting for better overall survival were good response to ICT and upfront neck dissection (UFND) before radiotherapy. However, improved outcomes were not evident in correlation to undergoing UFND before radiotherapy among responders. The researchers suggested that their findings are indicative of the possible efficacy of ICT as one treatment option for N3 HNSCC. UFND before radiotherapy could be avoided among responders to ICT, according to the researchers.
