Indoor tanning and the risk of developing non-cutaneous cancers: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Cancer Causes and Control Aug 16, 2018
O’Sullivan DE, et al. - Via this systematic literature review and meta-analysis, researchers estimated the link between indoor tanning and development of non-cutaneous cancers. They used random effects models to estimate the associations. They used subgroup analyses and the Q-test and I2 statistics to determine the heterogeneity. They identified 15 studies; from these 33 effect estimates for 12 cancer sites were included. Findings revealed indoor tanning did not offer protection against solid non-cutaneous cancers and could increase the risk for some hematologic malignancies. These findings were documented while controlling for sun exposure. These data call for continued efforts to reduce the use of indoor tanning devices given the well-established association with skin cancer and potential relationship with hematologic malignancies.
