Individualized survival prediction for patients with oropharyngeal cancer in the human papillomavirus era
Cancer Oct 11, 2018
Beesley LJ, et al. - Given the importance of accurate, individualized prognostication in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) with respect to patient counseling and treatment decision-making, researchers assessed the accuracy of OPSCC calculators incorporating human papillomavirus (HPV). They analyzed treatment outcomes for 856 patients with OPSCC by using 4 OPSCC calculators that integrate HPV into the estimation of 5-year overall survival. They found that estimation of survival by existing calculators was reasonable in OPSCC patients; however, they did note considerable variability in predictions for individual patients, which limits the clinical usefulness of these calculators.
