Index vs non-index readmission after hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery: Where do patients go to be readmitted?
Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Jul 26, 2018
Beal EW, et al. - The proportion of hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) readmissions was determined, in addition to evaluation of outcomes, that occur at an index vs non-index hospitals. Further, researchers sought for factors associated with non-index hospital readmission. Findings revealed readmission of nearly 1 in 5 patients to a non-index hospital, where the initial HPB operation had not taken place. They observed higher overall in-hospital mortality in association with readmission to a non-index hospital. The impact of regionalization of HPB care relative to site of subsequent readmission seems to have relevant implications for patients.
