Index C-reactive protein predicts increased severity in acute sigmoid diverticulitis

Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management Oct 10, 2018

Kechagias A, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the usefulness of C-reactive protein (CRP) in distinguishing acute diverticulitis (AD) with a higher degree of severity (Hinchey Ib; characterized by local perforation or small abscesses) from cases that can be treated noninvasively [Hinchey Ia (unperforated acute diverticulitis)/Hinchey Ib]. Outcomes suggest that major acute complications in AD could be predicted via CRP levels >173 mg/L obtained at the initial evaluation at the emergency unit. Urgent percutaneous drainage or surgical management is commonly required in these patients.
