Independent risk factors for pressure ulcer development in a high-risk nursing home population receiving evidence-based pressure ulcer prevention: Results from a study in 26 nursing homes in Belgium
International Wound Journal Mar 25, 2019
Anrys C, et al. - A high-risk nursing home population receiving evidence-based pressure ulcer (PU) prevention was examined to investigate factors that independently confer risk for PU development by using multiple logistic regression analysis. Participants comprised of 308 residents having a high risk of PU development (presence of non-blanchable erythema, Braden score ≤ 12 or Braden subscale “mobility” ≤ 2). For 14 days, PU incidence was observed. In high-risk residents, a significant association of PUs (category II-IV) with non-blanchable erythema, a lower Braden score, and pressure area-related pain was found even if these subjects received preventive care. High-risk individuals require a systematic risk evaluation, including pain assessment and skin observations, so that preventive care tailored to the needs of these individuals may be provided.
