Incremental healthcare expenditures of the spouses of older adults with Alzheimer diseases and related dementias (ADRD)
The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Oct 03, 2020
Chu J, Benjenk, I, et al. - Using data from the 2003 to 2017 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, a nationally representative survey from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, researchers sought to evaluate incremental healthcare expenditures related to being married to a person with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD). Results showed that in older adults with ADRD spouses, significantly higher unadjusted healthcare expenditures ($13,234.83 vs $10,533.89) can be related to the higher rate of comorbidities, rate of functional limitations, and mean age in this group. Increased home health use and reduced outpatient use in this population indicate the importance of customizing preventative healthcare and social services to meet this group's needs.
