Incremental cost of acute kidney injury after percutaneous coronary intervention in the United States
The American Journal of Cardiology Nov 20, 2019
Amin AP, McNeely C, Spertus JA, et al. - Researchers used the Premier database to determine the independent, incremental costs related to acute kidney injury (AKI) post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in this observational cross-sectional, large, nationally representative study. They also investigated the departmental elements of cost contributing to the incremental costs related to AKI. From 518 US hospitals, 1,443,297 PCI patients were examined. They used mixed-effects, multivariable linear regression with hospitals as random effects, to estimate the incremental cost of AKI from a hospital perspective achieved by a microcosting approach. Findings revealed a common occurrence of AKI as well as its independent link with ∼$10,000 incremental costs in PCI patients, suggesting that AKI costs confer a substantial burden in US hospitals. Meaningful cost savings could be achieved by successful attempts to avert AKI in patients who underwent PCI.
