Increasing trends in hospitalisations due to atrial fibrillation in Australia from 1993 to 2013
Heart Apr 05, 2019
Gallagher C, et al. - Researchers analyzed the trends in hospitalizations due to atrial fibrillation (AF) vs those due to myocardial infarction (MI) and heart failure (HF) in this study that was conducted in Australia. They also evaluated the associated economic burden of these hospitalizations and contribution of AF-related procedures. They focused on the rate of increase of AF, MI, and HF hospitalizations from 1993 to 2013. In 2013, a total of 61,424 AF hospitalizations were documented, representing a 295% increase in AF hospitalizations over a 21-year period. MI and HF hospitalizations, on the other hand, increased by only 73% and 39%, respectively, over the same period. An unabated rise in the burden of AF hospitalizations was noted. Cardioversion and AF ablation rose by 10% and 26% per year, respectively. From 1993 to 2013, costs attributed to AF hospitalization increased by 479%—an increase that was more than two times that of MI and HF.
