Increasing risk of diabetes mellitus in postmenopausal women with newly diagnosed primary breast cancer
Journal of Diabetes Investigation Jul 11, 2019
Wang CY, et al. - Among 4,607 women with primary breast cancer and 23,035 age-matched controls without breast cancer, experts explored if postmenopausal women who develop breast cancer are at a higher risk of developing diabetes mellitus (DM). Between 2001 and 2015, the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) was used to find women aged 55 and older (postmenopausal) with a primary breast cancer diagnosis. Findings suggested that postmenopausal women with breast cancer are at a higher risk of developing DM, irrespective of receiving hormone therapy. To improve related outcomes, they should be monitored closely for early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention.
