Increasing prevalence of hepatitis C among hospitalized children is associated with an increase in substance abuse

Barritt AS, et al. - Researchers aimed to investigate geographic and demographic data on inpatient hospitalizations in children with hepatitis C virus (HCV) to assess the effect of substance abuse on pediatric HCV prevalence. In hospitalized children, the increases of HCV were largely in teenagers, highly correlated with substance abuse, and concentrated in Northeast and Southern states. These outcomes strongly suggested that in order to prevent and treat HCV, public health efforts would also need to include adolescents.
