Increases in colonic bacterial diversity after ω-3 fatty acid supplementation predict decreased colonic prostaglandin E2 concentrations in healthy adults

The Journal of Nutrition Jul 05, 2019

Djuric Z, et al. – In a cohort of healthy adults (17 men and 30 women; aged 26–75 years), researchers performed a secondary analysis of the Fish Oil Study to investigate the relationship between interindividual variations in colonic bacteria and variability in the attenuation of colonic prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) concentrations following personalized supplementation with ω-3 (n–3) fatty acids. In all, little influence of dietary supplementation with ω-3 fatty acids on intestinal bacteria was evident among study participants. However, reductions in colonic PGE2 were significantly predicted by an increase in diversity in the luminal brushings.
