Increased vascular endothelial growth factor D is associated with atrial fibrillation and ischaemic stroke
Heart Dec 01, 2018
Berntsson J, et al. – Researchers investigated whether vascular endothelial growth factor-D (VEGF-D) has an association with incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and ischemic stroke in this study involving 4,689 individuals (40% men) without a history of AF from the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study—a prospective, population-based study in Sweden. Fasting blood samples were collected from patients (median age, 58 years) and were examined for VEGF-D levels. The risk of AF and ischemic stroke in relation to VEGF-D levels was assessed using Cox regression analyses, adjusted for multiple risk factors. Findings revealed associations of increased VEGF-D levels with AF and ischemic stroke. Those with AF showed a more pronounced link with ischemic stroke.
