Increased the risk of osteoporosis with hysterectomy: A longitudinal follow-up study using a national sample cohort
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Mar 15, 2019
Choi HG, et al. - Using the national cohort study from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, researchers analyzed data obtained from 9,082 patients who had undergone hysterectomy in order to examine if hysterectomy without/with bilateral oophorectomy is associated with the occurrence of osteoporosis. Outcomes suggested an increased occurrence of osteoporosis in patients who had undergone hysterectomy compared with that in matched control subjects, regardless of bilateral oophorectomy status. In the different age subgroups of this group, the adjusted hazard ratios for osteoporosis were 1.84 for ages 40–44 years, 1.52 for ages 45–49 years, 1.44 for ages 50–54 years, 1.61 for ages 55–59 years, and 1.08 for ages ≥ 60 years.
