Increased salivary AKR1B10 level: Association with progression and poor prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma

Head & Neck Nov 20, 2018

Ko HH, et al. - Experts assessed how salivary aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B10 (AKR1B10) level are associated with progression and prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). They determined the AKR1B10 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). For screening high-risk patients with OSCC and monitoring the progression of OSCC, the salivary AKR1B10 level may be a promising biomarker. In the patients with OSCC, the mean salivary AKR1B10 levels were significantly higher than in the normal controls. Findings suggested a significant association of higher salivary AKR1B10 levels with larger tumor size, more advanced clinical stage, and areca quid chewing habit. A significantly poorer survival was seen in the patients with OSCC with a higher salivary AKR1B10 level than those with a lower salivary AKR1B10 level.
