Increased risk of larynx cancer in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease from a national sample cohort
Clinical Otolaryngology Mar 24, 2019
Kim SY, et al. - Using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort from 2002 to 2013, researchers estimated the risk of larynx cancer in subjects with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). They estimated the incidence of lip and oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx cancers. They recognized head and neck cancer using medical claim codes for surgical, radiation, and chemotherapeutic treatments and death records from the National Statistical Office. They found the adjusted HR for larynx cancer was 2.32 in the GERD group (matched 1:2 with controls); they did not observe statistically significant HRs for lip and oral cavity cancer, oropharynx cancer, and hypopharynx cancer in the GERD group. They also reported the adjusted OR for GERD, 2.03 in the larynx cancer group. Overall, a higher risk of larynx cancer was concluded in relation to GERD.
