Increased risk of larynx cancer in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease from a national sample cohort
Clinical Otolaryngology May 01, 2019
Kim SY, et al. - Using a national sample cohort of the Korean population, researchers assessed the connections between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and head and neck cancer. Using data collected from patients aged ≥40 years, two studies were designed in the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort from 2002 to 2013. In the GERD group, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for larynx cancer was 2.32. However, there were no statistically significant HRs for lip and oral cavity cancer, oropharynx cancer, and hypopharynx cancer. In the larynx cancer group, the adjusted odds ratio for GERD was 2.03; consistent outcomes were obtained in subgroup analyses. Overall, the investigators concluded that gastroesophageal reflux disease raises the larynx cancer risk.
