Increased risk of hypertension associated with spondyloarthritis disease duration: Results from the ASAS-COMOSPA Study
The Journal of Rheumatology Jul 08, 2019
Derakhshan MH, et al. - Via the data from the COMOSPA study of 3,923 subjects, the researchers assessed the correlation of spondyloarthritis (SpA) disease duration and delay in determination with cardiovascular (CV)-related conditions. Hypertension (HTN), ischemic heart disease, stroke, and diabetes mellitus were the principal CV-related conditions. In both univariable and multivariable analysis, HTN was affiliated with SpA disease span. Age, male sex, current body mass index, ever steroid therapy, and ever synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug therapy were other factors correlated to HTN but not nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). In subjects with the axial-only SpA phenotype, the most robust connection of HTN and disease span was observed, however, it was not seen in those with peripheral-only SpA. No association of the other CV conditions with the SpA disease term could be ascertained. Hence, in the ASAS-COMOSPA cohort, the span of SpA disease was related to greater odds of HTN, particularly in those with an axial disease and not with other CV-related conditions. Furthermore, no association of HTN to NSAID exposure could be noticed.
