Increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke in lung cancer survivors: A Korean nationwide study of 20,458 patients

Lung Cancer Sep 30, 2019

Yoon DW, Shin DW, Cho JH, et al. - Researchers used the Korean National Health Insurance Service Database to compare lung cancer survivors vs the general non-cancer population in terms of the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. This study included 20,458 patients who had surgery for lung cancer between 2007 and 2013. Coronary heart disease (CHD), myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke (IS), and death were assessed as outcome variables. A follow-up was performed until 2016. Findings revealed an increased risk of CHD and IS among lung cancer survivors vs the general non-cancer population. Thus, paying meticulous attention to cardiovascular risk in lung cancer survivors was recommended, particularly for those treated with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, so that both early and long-term survivorship may be ensured.
