Increased risk of atrial fibrillation in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia: A population-based cohort study
Clinical Cardiology Dec 01, 2018
Hu WS, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers compared the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) between a cohort of 15,670 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and a propensity-matched cohort of 15,670 control participants in the national health registry. The hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of incident AF associated with BPH were estimated by using univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. Based on the receipt of a BPH surgery, the risk of AF was assessed among BPH patients in a subgroup analysis. The investigators identified an association of BPH with greater AF occurrence. The link between BPH and AF was reduced once surgical intervention for BPH was applied.
