Increased risk for hip fracture after death of a spouse—Further support for bereavement frailty?
Osteoporosis International Dec 19, 2019
Vala CH, Lorentzon M, Sundh V, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study of all Swedish married people aged 60 to 100 years (n = 1,783,035), from 1987 to 2002, who were followed up in order to ascertain whether married women and men had an increased risk of hip fracture following death of a spouse. During the follow-up period, hip fractures among widows (n = 21,305) and among widowers (n = 6,538) were recorded. In young widowers in the age range of 60–69 years, the raised risk was particularly noticeable. Thus, a potential impact of bereavement on frailty was noted in this observation of a greater hip fracture risk in both genders in association with the death of a partner.
