Increased rates of readmission, reoperation, and mortality following open reduction and internal fixation of ankle fractures are associated with diabetes mellitus
The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery Feb 15, 2019
Liu JW, et al. - Between 2006 and 2015, researchers assessed 17,464 patients to calculate the rates of readmission, reoperation, and mortality in subjects with vs without diabetes mellitus in the 30-day postoperative period after ankle fracture surgery. They observed significantly higher rates of readmission, unplanned reoperation, and rates of mortality among candidates with diabetes vs patients without diabetes. They also noticed that subjects with diabetes had significantly greater age-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of unplanned readmission, unplanned reoperation, and mortality after ankle surgery.
