Increased mortality among patients with diabetes following first-ever transfemoral amputation
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jul 19, 2018
Sjödin L, et al. - In the present study, the researchers analyzed mortality at 1 week and 1 year after first-ever transfemoral amputation (TFA) with special reference to diabetes. For this investigation, 162 first-ever TFAs from 1996 to 2012 were included. They collected mortality data with the use of the Swedish personal identification number. The findings demonstrated that postoperative mortality was high and the high mortality rate highlighted the need for early and adequate evaluation of every patients overall condition and whether amputation was beneficial or not. Close monitoring of blood-sugar in patients with diabetes and early treatment of infections and cardiac events in all patients were suggested.
