Increased medical complications, revisions, in-hospital lengths of stay, and cost in patients with hypogonadism undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Aug 23, 2019
Ardeljan A, et al. - Researchers examined the odds of medical complications, revisions, in-hospital lengths of stay (LOS), and cost of care among patients with hypogonadism who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) . They retrospectively analyzed a Humana patient-population consisting of 8 million lives and filtered patients by male sex and patients with hypogonadism. The patients were then matched to controls in a 1:4 ratio according to age and medical comorbidities. This analysis of over 1,600 patients suggests greater odds of 90-day postoperative medical complications (9.45 vs 4.67%), 2-year revisions (3.99 vs 2.80%, increased LOS (3.47 days vs 3.27 days) and 90-day costs ($15,564.31 vs $14,856.69) among patients with hypogonadism undergoing primary TKA.
