Increased left atrial size is associated with higher atrial fibrillation recurrence in patients treated with antiarrhythmic medications
Clinical Cardiology Jun 20, 2018
Mulukutla S, et al. - Researchers theorized that left atrial (LA) size, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and severity of mitral regurgitation (MR) are predictors of atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence among AF patients treated with antiarrhythmic medications. To test this, they assessed the link between 3 common echocardiographic parameters (LA size, LVEF, and MR) and AF recurrence in a real-world cohort of AF patients treated with antiarrhythmic medications who had transthoracic echocardiograms. They utilized echocardiography reports for these subjects to retrospectively obtain data on LA size, LVEF, and MR. They followed patients from the time of the echocardiogram until first recurrence of AF. Findings demonstrated that LA size significantly predicted AF recurrence in this cohort of patients.
